What is Iditol?
Iditol is a small, independent website about organic chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical engineering, built around six free calculators: a Molar Mass Calculator, a Molarity Calculator, a Dilution Calculator (C1V1=C2V2), a pH Calculator, an Ideal Gas Law Calculator (PV=nRT), and a Percent Yield Calculator. Around the tools sit a blog, a set of learn guides, and the Museum of Chemistry & the Elements, a history-and-elements gallery built from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons entries.
Who is this for?
Anyone doing chemistry arithmetic and wanting a quick, correct answer: a student checking a problem set, someone in a lab prepping a stock solution, or a hobbyist trying to remember how the ideal gas law rearranges. The tools assume you already know roughly what number you need — they just do the arithmetic reliably so you don’t have to re-derive it by hand every time.
How do the calculators actually work?
Each one runs a specific, named piece of chemistry, not a black box. The Molar Mass Calculator parses a typed formula — including nested parentheses, subscripts, and hydrates like CuSO4·5H2O — and sums atomic weights per element. The Molarity Calculator solves M = n/V (with n = mass ÷ molar mass) for whichever quantity you leave blank. The Dilution Calculator solves C1V1 = C2V2 for the missing term and reports the solvent volume to add. The pH Calculator converts between pH, pOH, [H⁺], and [OH⁻] at 25 °C, or derives pH from a strong acid or base concentration. The Ideal Gas Law Calculator solves PV = nRT for pressure, volume, amount, or temperature, using R = 0.082057 L·atm·mol⁻¹·K⁻¹ or the SI value 8.314 J·mol⁻¹·K⁻¹ depending on your chosen units. The Percent Yield Calculator computes (actual ÷ theoretical) × 100, and can also build the theoretical yield from moles × molar mass first.
Where do the numbers and formulas come from?
Atomic weights come from the standard IUPAC values used in textbooks and reference tables; the equations (M = n/V, C1V1=C2V2, PV=nRT, percent yield) are the standard forms taught in introductory and analytical chemistry. Nothing is proprietary or invented for this site — you could work out any of these results by hand with a periodic table and enough patience. The calculators just do it faster and reduce arithmetic mistakes.
Is everything on the site free?
Yes. All six tools, the blog, the learn guides, and the museum are free to use, with no account or sign-up. The site is supported by on-page advertising, which is how it stays free to run.
Can I rely on this for lab work, coursework, or a safety decision?

Every entry, image, and fact in it is drawn directly from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, not written by us.
